Tomo Koizumi

Dress designer / Studio artist

Born in Chiba, Japan in 1988.

He was shocked by the beauty of the Dior

collection of John Galliano when he was

14 years old. This moment led him to start

making dresses through self-taught methods.

In 2011, he  established TOMO KOIZUMI

when he was still a student

at Chiba University. He has steadily built

up his career through focusing on costume

production for musicians and Japanese

celebrities. His works are filled with

eye-catching ruffle designs and a varied

selection of colors.

In February 2019, his talent was discovered

through Instagram by Katie Grand,

world-renowned stylist and former editor

-in-chief of LOVE Magazine and current

editor-in-chief of Perfect Magazine, who

held his first fashion show in New York City.

Marc Jacobs, makeup artist Pat McGrath, and

hair stylist Guido Palau gave him full support.

After this one night, he has been expanding

his activities into worldwide.

In 2020, he was selected as one of the LVMH

Prize winners. In the opening ceremony of

the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, MISIA wore

a colorful dress designed by TOMO KOIZUMI

as she sang the national anthem. This event

made headlines all around Japan and in the

fashion industry. In the same year, he won

the Mainichi Fashion Grand Prix.

Two museums have shown great interest

in his work: the Metropolitan Museum of Art

in New York and the National Gallery of

Victoria in Australia have both stored his

archival pieces as part of their permanent

collections.

Koizumi, who has established a unique

position in the fashion industry, has

always been considering how to create

beautiful dresses that can also be treated

as priceless art.

In December 2023, he held his first art solo

exhibition at YUKIKOMIZUTANI TERRADA

ART COMPLEX II in Tokyo.

Through this exhibition, he hoped to create

an opportunity that allows people to

re-examine the values of what is fashion

and be a bridge between the art and

fashion industries.

His clients include Lady Gaga, Sam Smith,

Björk, and other world-famous celebrities.
